Position Overview

We are seeking a Backend Systems & Data Operations Engineer to manage and support a defined set of internal backend tools, databases, and server-based applications. This role is operational and maintenance-focused, not greenfield software development. The successful candidate will be responsible for keeping existing systems stable, available, and well-documented.

Systems & Software Environment (You Will Manage)

The role includes day-to-day support and maintenance of the following:

  • Linux-based servers (on-prem and/or cloud-hosted)

  • Relational databases (PostgreSQL and/or MySQL)

  • Internal APIs and backend services

  • File storage and data transfer workflows (SFTP, secure file shares)

  • Scheduled jobs and background processes (cron, task schedulers)

  • System monitoring and logs (basic health checks, error tracking)

  • User access controls and service accounts

Experience with all items is not required, but familiarity with several is expected.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain uptime and reliability of backend systems and databases

  • Perform routine database maintenance, backups, and basic performance checks

  • Monitor logs and system health; troubleshoot and resolve operational issues

  • Manage configuration changes and controlled updates to backend services

  • Coordinate with operations and leadership on data availability and system needs

  • Document system configurations, procedures, and recurring issues

  • Support integrations between internal tools and data sources

Required Qualifications

  • Approximately 5 years of experience in backend systems, IT operations, data ops, or infrastructure support

  • Hands-on experience with Linux environments

  • Working knowledge of SQL databases

  • Comfort using the command line and reading logs

  • Strong organizational skills and disciplined change management

  • Ability to work on-site in Huntsville, AL

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Docker or lightweight containerized services

  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)

  • Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL processes, or scheduled jobs

  • Background in defense, government, or compliance-heavy environments
